In high school, we all learned the basics of our anatomy and the functions of each organ. For example, we know that veins make up a large component of our body and carry blood towards the heart. While this is the main function of our veins, there are a few more aspects important to know your veins.
Things You Should Know About Veins
The Vein is Made of Three Layers
Your veins are tube shaped channels that allow an easy flow of oxygen back to your heart. The outer layer is constructed out of connective tissues to give the vein a sturdy structure. The middle layer is made from smooth muscles that help pump the blood through the veins. The innermost layer contains a lining of membranous tissues.
Veins Are Different from Arteries
When it comes to your blood circulation, there are two key components. While veins carry oxygen-poor blood back to the heart, arteries perform a similar function except they carry oxygen-rich blood away from your heart. The blood gets carried to tissue and muscle all over your body, and the nutrients and oxygen get dumped off. The blood then travels through venules and transferred into your veins to be taken back to your heart to restart the entire process.
Veins Are Strong and Flexible
Because of the three different layers, your veins have the ability to move and stretch as needed. Over time, however, your veins can weaken and lose some of their elasticity. This can lead to the development of varicose veins, chronic vein insufficiency and deep vein thrombosis. Varicose veins occur when the valves inside veins can no longer function properly, and a backflow of blood can pool in one area. This causes your veins to swell and can bring about many different vein symptoms such as itching, throbbing and swelling.
